Okonjima

Okonjima lies nestled in the unspoilt beauty of the Omboroko mountains, part of the well known Waterberg Plateau. It’s much more than a luxury lodge - Okonjima is also home to The AfriCat Foundation. Africat is known internationally and was recently featured in an award winning documentary filmed for the Discovery Channel. This is a non-profit organisation dedicated to the conservation and protection of Namibia's much threatened cats, especially the cheetah and the leopard.

The graceful 'Main House' consists of an up-to-date, chef-designed kitchen with wine and soft drink coolers, both gas and electrical cooking facilities and an endless supply of ice from a double door refrigerator. The living spaces are punctuated by a spacious lounge and dining area with an open, wood-burning fireplace and 2 en-suite, luxury bedrooms. The bathrooms have both an inside shower and a spectacular, outside bush-shower, together with a beautiful bath-with-a-view.

The Main House has a magnificent infinity pool, surrounded on three sides by African, red teak decking and a walkway to an open, shaded 'Sala' - for some serious birding and afternoon napping - incorporating a roof fan to stir the gentle breeze that crosses the adjoining waterhole. 2 separate, exquisite, thatched Suites situated approximately 35m - 50m on either side of 'The Main House' are completed by a well-stocked mini bar in each Suite. Guests, once again, have the choice of either an inside or a unique, outside bush-shower. Toilets and bidets accompany the baths, all with a bush view.

All the bedrooms have air-conditioning, high airy roofs with fans and when needed, heating facilities. Each bedroom has a dial-up, internet connection with ample work space. An array of three concertinaing, glass-paneled doors easily fold away to give magnificent, panoramic views of the surrounding vistas. These open doorways may be substituted with an elegant but practical, 'roll-down' canvas partitioning that contains heavy-duty gauze screens. This zip-fastened, secure, tent-style canvassing not only provides sufficient light, but also contributes to the impression of living in the wild by delivering the audible ambience of your surroundings, while still maintaining a degree of comfort and safety.

A personal host or hostess and chef attend to all your needs whilst you enjoy your exclusive guide and game-drive vehicle, thus setting the leisurely pace that bests suits you, your family or small group of friends, during your stay at The Villa.

Onguma Plains– The Fort

The Fort is unlike any other, the only one of its kind in Namibia. It is built in exactly the right spot to give guests probably one of the best sunset views in the whole of Namibia - overlooking the beautiful scarceness of the Etosha Pans, decorated only with its wild animals and hundreds of Camel Thorn trees.

Upon arriving at The Fort, you will be received by not only our friendly staff, but also massive raw walls, stunning stone cladded features and a huge tower with the views toward Etosha and Fisher's Pan. The Fort will surprise you at every corner; a classical African feel combined with a touch of Moroccan and Indian flavours, characterised by a selection of the most beautiful antique windows and doors.

Accommodation at Onguma - The Fort consists of 12 mini Suites, all situated adjacent to the Main Fort extending on both sides to the south and the north. Every mini Suite is completely private and about 50 metres apart from one another and is equipped with a bar fridge, telephone and an air cooling system for those warmer days. The spacious bathroom has both an inside shower as well as an outside shower area. From every area of the room, wooden decks lead you towards the outside seating area and sun loungers for just relaxing and enjoying the extraordinary view.

The large bathroom has a wonderful open shower area, as well as a bath in which to relax and reflect upon your day's experiences.

Little Ongava

Etosha National Park is Namibia's premier wildlife destination and at almost the size of Switzerland it is certainly one of Africa's largest game parks. Large herds of plains game concentrate around the waterholes in the dry season, whilst the summer month's sporadic rainfall produces a profusion of life.

A warm welcome awaits at this intimate and exclusive lodge, with unrivalled privacy in only three spacious, private and luxurious units each with its own plunge pool, 'sala', en-suite bathroom - along with a bath with a view - and indoor and outdoor shower. These and the dining and lounge area have wonderful views of the waterhole below the camp and the latter lends itself to relaxed, stylish dining under an African sky or under thatch.

The Ongava Game Reserve is situated on the southern boundary of Etosha National Park, enabling large game such as elephant and lion to move between the Park and the private reserve. Day and night wildlife-viewing drives, visiting hides that overlook waterholes and walks with experienced guides can all be enjoyed exclusively on this reserve. Game drives and daytrips into the easily accessible Okaukuejo area of Etosha National Park are rewarding, with sightings of lion, elephant, gemsbok, springbok, red hartebeest, and white and black rhino. Guests at Little Ongava share a dedicated guide and Land Rover, ensuring the best possible nature experience at one of Africa's great wildlife destinations. A hide at the camp waterhole provides superb photographic opportunities. At Ongava the characteristic wildlife of the area is present, with both desert-adapted black and white rhino to be seen as well as lion.

A highlight at Ongava is that it is one of the few private game reserves in southern Africa where there is a chance of seeing both black and white rhino. For those who enjoy close wildlife encounters, tracking white rhino on foot with a guide is a highlight not to be missed.

Ongava Lodge

Ongava Lodge offers luxury accommodation in 14 en-suite units made of rock and thatch. There are impressive views from the main lounge, bar and dining areas, as they are situated close to the top of a hill, part of the foothills of the unpronounceable Ondundozonanandana Range. There is also an inviting pool to cool off in the heat of the day. Meals are either served in the main dining area under thatch with a view over the camp's waterhole, or on the dining deck under the stars. Ongava Lodge was listed on the Condé Naste Traveller's Gold Reserve List for 2005.

Etosha National Park is Namibia's premier wildlife destination and one of Africa's largest game reserves. Large herds of wildlife teem around the waterholes and the endless plains offer breathtaking vistas.

Activities include game drives in open 4x4 vehicles into the Okaukuejo area of Etosha where lion, elephant (seasonal), gemsbok, springbok, black rhino, greater kudu and red hartebeest can be seen at numerous waterholes and fringing habitats. Apex predators like leopard, cheetah and spotted hyena also occur in this area.

In addition, hides and walks with guides are enjoyed on the private reserve. Ongava has resident white and black rhino - one of the few private reserves in southern Africa - allowing guests staying at Ongava the unique opportunity to see both of these charismatic species. For those who enjoy close wildlife encounters, tracking white rhino on foot with a guide is a highlight not to be missed.

Staying at Mowani Mountain Camp, a traveller can easily join in an excursion to explore the historical site of Twyfelfontein. This wonderful archealogical site offers more than 2,500 engravings as well as various paintings, and is probably the finest example of rock engravings in Southern Africa.

Little Kulala – Namibia

Little Kulala, a luxurious desert retreat, is situated in the private 37 000-hectare Kulala Wilderness Reserve - the gateway to Namibia's Sand Sea with its towering red dunes and clear starry skies.

The 11 climate-controlled, thatched "kulalas" (the word means 'to sleep') merge impeccably into the timeless desert landscape, with exquisite fittings and fixtures, innovative bleached decks each with a private plunge pool. Each kulala has a rooftop 'skybed' for romantic stargazing, with both indoor and outdoor showers.

An elegant entertainment area includes a library, wine cellar, craft boutique, lounge and dining areas; dining under the clear Namibian skies is a highlight. The interiors have been designed to provide an all-natural and unique experience in this most beautiful environment. The extensive use of neutral colours, gorgeous textures and natural light reproduce the soothing pastel tones of the desert. Pure linens, cottons and mohair dyed with natural vegetable dyes all make for a very organic camp which takes its inspiration from its surroundings, notably from the magnificent Dead Vlei in the middle of Sossusvlei. The overall mood and feel is cool, serene, organic and sheltering.

Desert-adapted wildlife such as ostrich, springbok and gemsbok eke out an existence and are sparsely distributed here. Smaller creatures such as bat-eared fox and aardwolf can be seen at night in the cool desert air, and one bird, the aptly named dune lark, has its entire global distribution limited to the area, so dependent is it on the area's characteristic sands.

Early morning guided game drives to the spectacular towering dunes of Sossusvlei are through a private gate into the reserve. Sossusvlei is situated within the Namib Desert, the oldest desert in the world, which itself is part of the Namib Naukluft National Park that stretches 400km south of Walvis Bay and is sandwiched between the west coast and the escarpment that runs parallel more than 100km inland. Its huge red dunes and flat valley floors make up the archetypical view of the Namib that is world famous.

Guided drives and walks are also offered on the private Kulala Wilderness Reserve with incredible views, desert-adapted wildlife and plants. A balloon safari at extra cost offers a unique experience soaring silently above the desert before landing for a champagne breakfast.
